Olympus SP-810UZ, Compact Camera, 36X Ultra Wide Zoom

Travelers looking for a camera flexible enough to get up close for beautiful macro images of flowers while exploring exotic islands or to capture the magnificence of the Old Faithful geyser from hundreds of feet away without changing lenses, now have the ultimate camera with the introduction of the new SP-810UZ. Featuring a wide 1:2.9-5.7 24-864mm zoom lens and a 36x optical zoom, this S-series camera is one of the smallest compact cameras currently on the market with a zoom of 36x, providing further proof that Olympus lets you capture it all.

“The SP-810UZ is the best zoom performance Olympus has ever delivered,” said Jennifer Schmell, product manager Olympus Imaging America Inc. “No compact camera from Olympus has ever offered such impressive wide-angle zoom performance. As the most powerful camera in Olympus’ ultrazoom category, it succeeds the prestigious SP-800UZ.”

Expert Still and HD Movie Performance

From the sidelines of the soccer field to bird-watching on a riverboat, engage AF Tracking technology to lock focus on your fast-moving subjects and keep them in focus, even while they move in and out of the frame. The fast, wide 1:2.9-5.7 24-864mm zoom lens combined with Dual Image Stabilization, enhanced ISO sensitivity, Shadow Adjustment Technology and TruePic III+ image processor guarantee tack-sharp photos and virtually eliminate blur in high-definition (HD) videos. With HDMI Control, you can use your HDTV’s remote to control playback functions and navigate the camera’s menus from the comfort of your couch.

Be Creative and Express More

Ten Magic Filters apply your own creative vision to movies and stills for greater artistic freedom. New Miniature Filter narrows the depth of focus and enhances color and contrast to convert your real-life images to look like a magical toy world. The new Reflection Filter adds a reflection to your subject as though it were standing over a glassy, still lake. In 3D-mode, the SP-810UZ combines two photos of the same subject from different angles to generate dynamic 3D images that can be viewed on a 3D-compatible monitor or television. Another creative highlight is In-Camera Panorama, which helps you capture a super-wide angle photo simply by panning the camera across the scene to combine three shots into one inside the camera.

Easy Operation

By eliminating time-consuming manual settings, the SP-810UZ frees you to concentrate on your subject. Intelligent Auto Mode recognizes the five most common photo scenarios and automatically optimizes settings such as focus and lighting. Don’t forget the family pet! Activate Pet Detection mode to automatically capture your furry friend’s face when it looks at the camera. The SP-810UZ is also compatible with an optional Eye-Fi SD card, adding Wi-Fi capability so you can automatically upload images to your computer as you take them. Be the life of the social media party by uploading your shots immediately.

3-inch, 460K dots High-resolution LCD monitor to enjoy viewing photos you just took

The OLYMPUS SZ Series is a digital camera that is perfect for travel and sports events. Thanks to its advanced optical expertise, Olympus has been able to incorporate in a compact, palm-size camera the same high-powered super-telephoto capability that normally makes SLR cameras so bulky and heavy. Because it is so small, this camera is an ideal travelling companion, offering the power of a full-size camera and lenses without increasing the amount of luggage. The SZ Series is an easy-to-use “all-in-one” camera that makes it possible anyone to enjoy the pleasure of advanced photography.

The Olympus SZ-11 covers a remarkably wide shooting range with focal lengths ranging from 25mm wide-angle to 500mm telephoto with the super-telephoto 20x optical zoom lens. It can capture big, up-close images of even the most distant subjects, creating high-impact pictures by capturing details that cannot be seen with the naked eye, such as the facial expressions of children in athletic or theatrical events or athletes in professional sport competitions. To reduce the picture blur commonly associated with telephoto shooting effectively, the SZ-11 features DUAL IS using a CCD-shift image stabilization mechanism and high-sensitivity image capturing. It also features dedicated Movie REC button to immediately shooting movies and Magic Movies to enhance your camera life. Moreover, you can enjoy the SZ-11 in your usual life as well with the full array of functions such as 3D Photos, Beauty Mode, Beauty Make, and Pet Mode.

Furthermore, Magic Movies recordings are available in Pop, Pin Hole, Fisheye, Drawing, Soft Focus, Punk, Watercolor and Reflection delivering distinct look and artistic feel.

Reflection: Applies an effect like a reflection on a lake in a night scene or a landscape for a fantasy effect.

3D Photo Shooting Function

You can shoot dynamic 3D photos in any mode from usual life to landscape. Recreate a sense of depth like that of the original scene. MP Format (Multi Picture Format)

This is a format standardized by CIPA to handle multiple images under a single image file. When you use the 3D Photo Shooting function, the images for the right and left eye are recorded in a single MP format file.

Pet Mode

The camera automatically detects dogs’ and cats’ faces. Selecting the [Pet Mode - Dog] or [Pet Mode - Cat] from the scene mode, the camera will quickly detect your pet’s face and automatically focus on it before shooting the photo. The Engadget Show - 023: We tour a headphone factory, talk record labels, and look at They Might Be Giants' favorite gadgets

The Engadget Show is back, and this time we're in full-on rock star mode. We kick things off with a trip to the Engadget Laboratories, where Brian and Terrence test out some sub-$100 headphones on a quartet of guinea pigs. Do you really get what you pay for when you buy a pair of earbuds from your local Big Box retailer?

Things get a bit ritzier when Darren tours Westone's laboratories in Colorado to find out how a pair of $950 in-ear headphones are made. Hint: it involves squirting silicone into our managing editor's ears and a whole lot of sanding.

Next up, we stop by the reviews table, where Tim and Brian take a look at this month's most exciting gadgets, including the new MacBook Air, Sony Vaio Z, Toshiba Thrive, and Droid 3.

John Flansburgh and John Linnell of They Might Be Giants pay a visit to Engadget headquarters to show off some of their favorite lo-fi musical gadgets, including the Stylophone and a circuit-bent Speak and Spell. Also, if you've ever wondered what the long reigning kings of underground geek rock would sound like given the T-Pain treatment, this is a segment you're not gonna want to miss.

Universal Republic Records' VP Digital Colleen Quill also stops by to discuss the role of the major label in the world of Twitter, iTunes, Spotify, and the like. And we wrap things up with a performance by New York City's own Cookies.

The video stream of the show is above, and you can also download us in HD below. Oh, and if you're still waiting for some Spotify invites, don't worry -- we've got you covered.

Fujitsu Toshiba finally announces the Official World’s First Mango Phone

About 2 weeks ago, there have been leaks that came out in the open about Japan being able bag the deal for selling the world’s first Windows Phone 7 Mango through Fujitsu Toshiba. And guess what, this time, everything is now official. It has been announced earlier that the IS12T will be the first mobile phone to be out with the said OS, according to Japan’s Microsoft President Yasuyuki Higuchi. It may give a little feel of the Nokia N9 with the pink color, but its Mango after all.

It is also confirmed that the waterproof phone will have a 3.7-inch WVGA touch screen, with a Qualcomm’s MSM8655 CPU, whose clock speed has been undisclosed yet, which could go by 1GHz minimum, based on specs from other current Windows phones. It also carries a large 13.2 megapixel camera with autofocus. What is more amazing is that it has an internal 32GB of flash storage, a rare treat! KDDI mentions that the new handset may be out sometime September.

InterDigital files ITC complaint against Nokia, Huawei, and ZTE for 3G patent infringement

Remember when InterDigital aired its grievances with Nokia before the International Trade Commission several years ago, alleging Espoo infringed a few of its 3G patents? Well, what's old is new again, and the company's filed another complaint with the ITC against the Finnish phone maker, Huawei, and ZTE, too. This time around, the hammer's been forged from seven patents for various WCDMA and CDMA2000 technologies allegedly found in those companies' phones, broadband dongles, and tablets. Reuters reports that, should the federal agency take up InterDigital's cause, Huawei and Nokia will fight the good fight, and we imagine that ZTE won't be rolling over, either. Of course, the ITC has 30 days to start an investigation, so we'll know within a month if InterDigital's latest IP fishing expedition has a shot to yield a bounty as big as it's gotten before.

InterDigital Files Complaint Against Nokia, Huawei and ZTE With International Trade Commission

Company Seeks Importation Ban for 3G Wireless Products that Infringe on U.S. Patents

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiaries InterDigital Communications, LLC, InterDigital Technology Corporation and IPR Licensing, Inc. (collectively, "InterDigital") have filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission ("ITC") against Nokia Corporation and Nokia Inc. (collectively, "Nokia"), Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and FutureWei Technologies, Inc. d/b/a Huawei Technologies (USA) (collectively, "Huawei") and ZTE Corporation and ZTE (USA) Inc. (collectively, "ZTE" and together with Nokia and Huawei, "Respondents"). The complaint alleges that the Respondents have engaged in unfair trade practices by making for importation into the United States, importing, and selling after importation, certain 3G wireless devices, including WCDMA and cdma2000 mobile phones, USB sticks, mobile hotspots, and tablets, and components of such devices that infringe seven of InterDigital's U.S. patents. The action also extends to certain WCDMA and cdma2000 devices incorporating WiFi functionality. In conjunction with the ITC filing, InterDigital® has also filed a complaint in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware alleging that Respondents' 3G wireless devices infringe these same InterDigital patents.

"Over the past thirty years, InterDigital has invested nearly one billion dollars in the development of advanced digital cellular technologies, creating important innovations, and helping to drive an industry creating billions of wireless connections"
InterDigital's complaint with the ITC seeks an exclusion order that would bar from entry into the U.S. any infringing 3G wireless devices (and components) that are imported by or on behalf of Respondents, including wireless mobile phones, USB sticks, mobile hotspots, and tablets capable of operating with a 3G WCDMA or 3G cdma2000® system. InterDigital's complaint also seeks a cease and desist order to bar further sales of infringing products that have already been imported into the United States. The complaint asserts U.S. Patent Nos. 7,349,540, 7,502,406, 7,536,013, 7,616,970, 7,706,332, 7,706,830, and 7,970,127.

"Over the past thirty years, InterDigital has invested nearly one billion dollars in the development of advanced digital cellular technologies, creating important innovations, and helping to drive an industry creating billions of wireless connections," said Lawrence Shay, President of InterDigital's patent holding subsidiaries. "During that period, we have signed dozens of license agreements with manufacturers, giving them access to a patent portfolio of approximately 19,000 issued patents and patent applications – among the largest wireless portfolios in the world," continued Shay. "The vast majority of our agreements have been reached without the need for litigation. However, despite having engaged in good faith efforts to license our patents to Nokia, Huawei and ZTE, we have not been able to reach an acceptable resolution. As a result, to protect our intellectual property and the interests of our licensees, we made the decision to bring legal action against these parties."

By statute, the ITC has 30 days from the filing of the complaint to decide whether to formally institute an investigation.

As of June 30, 2011, the company's patent portfolio consisted of approximately 1,400 U.S. patents and approximately 8,000 non-U.S. patents. In addition, as of June 30, 2011, the company had approximately 1,250 pending applications in the U.S. and approximately 8,250 pending non-U.S. patent applications. The patents and applications comprising the company's portfolio relate predominantly to digital wireless radiotelephony technology (including, without limitation, 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies).

The quiet revolution, introducing the new S1 Digital pilot’s headset

The quiet revolution, introducing the new S1 Digital pilots headset

Sennheiser S1 Digital headset

At EAA Air Venture Oshkosh, audio specialist Sennheiser is presenting the S1 Digital, an innovative aviation headset with fully adaptive digital noise cancellation. NoiseGard / digital noise canceling technology accurately analyzes the surrounding situation at the push of a button to achieve uniquely superior results in noise cancellation. The premium headset features high wearing comfort with adjustable contact pressure for the ear cups and a special comfort zone for glasses, as well as a Bluetooth interface and clear voice transmission with a user customizable treble boost function. The headset is rounded off by a stylish design by BMW Group DesignworksUSA.

NoiseGard / digital adaptive noise canceling technology

“The new Sennheiser S1 Digital is in the truest sense a quiet revolution in the General Aviation Headsets product segment. It is a pilot’s headset with fully adaptive digital noise cancellation and many user customizable features,” explained David Dunlap, Director Sennheiser Aviation. For the pilots, this means that the headset no longer uses fixed filters and assumed values like conventional ANR systems but can continuously be optimized for changing noise conditions, for example during take-off and when cruising altitude has been reached. In this way, the S1 Digital offers optimum protection for the pilot’s hearing.

By pressing the Smart Update button integrated into the ear cup, the adaptive NoiseGard / digital circuitry measures the spectrum and intensity of surrounding noises and applies individual filters that are perfectly adapted to the situation. “At the core of the new noise canceling technology is a particularly powerful digital signal processor,” explained Jrg Buchberger, Business Segment Manager Aviation. “This processor generates a filter algorithm that specifically reduces the dominant noise proportions.” Fully adaptive noise cancellation is additionally supported by excellent passive noise attenuation.

Safe and reliable communication

The new S1 Digital was specially developed for use in single-engine and twin-engine propeller planes and helicopters. Its high speech intelligibility optimizes communication in the cockpit and with air traffic control (ATC). As a person’s perception of higher frequencies begins to diminish in their mid-thirties, the S1 Digital has a three-stage treble boost that is separately adjustable for each side and which focuses on speech. In addition, pilots can adapt the sound pressure level individually to their own hearing ability. As in all Sennheiser headsets, the Peak Level Protection feature reliably protects the pilot’s hearing against volume peaks above 110 dB. The boom microphone also helps to ensure clear intelligibility. It compensates for surrounding noise and guarantees clear speech transmission with a frequency response of 100 to 10,000 Hz.

Audio quality and operating comfort

The name Sennheiser has been synonymous with top-quality audio for more than 65 years. And the S1 Digital is no exception. It not only offers the best sound quality for cockpit communication, it also offers superior sound when used for listening to music. The headphones have a frequency response of 20 to 16,000 Hz. Using a Bluetooth interface on the control unit, the headset can be connected for example to an MP3 player, a computer or a mobile phone. “To bring out the best from the different audio sources, the headset has two separate audio mixers for communication and music,” Buchberger said. “The ATC signal and mobile phone are reproduced with a narrower band for high speech intelligibility, whereas music is played with a broader bandwidth to provide an excellent sound experience during the flight.”

External devices are conveniently controlled via an intuitive interface. If the mobile phone rings, the music is interrupted, an LED on the control unit flashes and the pilot is given an additional audio signal in the headphones. Calls are taken simply by pushing a button. The ATC signal is always given priority. If Bluetooth and NoiseGard / digital are used simultaneously, the headset has an operating period of more than 25 hours.

Comfort

The design of the headset was developed by Sennheiser in cooperation with BMW Group DesignworksUSA. Special emphasis was placed on functional details that positively influence the flying experience. A completely new feature is the headset’s individually adjustable contact pressure. “Pilots can now adjust the contact pressure of the ear cups in three stages between five and seven newtons. This enables them to find the perfect balance between a comfortable fit and optimum passive noise attenuation,” Buchberger explained. Also new are the ear cushions with a soft, flexible zone to provide extra comfort when wearing glasses. The design is rounded off by the attractive shape of the headband and ear cups that is reminiscent of the sweep of a wing.

The S1 Digital headset comes complete with a carrying case, a belt clip, a windshield, a cable clip, a user’s manual and a quick-reference guide, and will be delivered to Sennheiser’s worldwide sales partners beginning in August.

One Billion Payment Cards with Contactless Capabilities Expected to Ship in 2016

An estimated one billion payment cards with contactless capabilities will be shipped globally in 2016, up from just 170 million in 2010. This includes EMV dual interface cards and the non-EMV pure contactless push in the US.

Smart card shipments, which include not only contactless payment cards, but also EMV and non-EMV payment cards, will reach one billion during 2011. ABI Research forecasts that smart card shipments will overtake mag-stripe card shipments by 2015.

Gingerbread comes to T-Mobile G2x, users feel loved again

Dost our eyes deceive us, or are genuine, bona fide Gingerbread updates for the T-Mobile G2x taking to the airwaves? We're inclined to believe the latter, since the T-Mobile support site announced that the OTA download is now underway. The rollout begins less than a day after the refresh became available as a manual install via the LG Updater Tool. As if this isn't enough proof already, our inboxes have been flooded by G2x users who've personally witnessed Hades freeze over on their handset. Haven't seen it show up on yours yet? Fret not, getting these updates out to everyone takes time. But if you were an eager beaver who managed to beef your phone up with Android 2.3.3 manually, go ahead and relax; grab a lemonade, dust off the ol' hammock, and enjoy the rest of the summer afternoon free of (virtual) bugs.

US Consumer Interested in More Wi-Fi Services from Mobile Operators

Seventy four percent of smartphone users in the United States are interested in a mobile operator-provided service that uses Wi-Fi to provide lower cost calls, according to a recent MarketTools® Zoomerang® survey of 420 smartphone owners. The survey, commissioned by Kineto Wireless, also showed 72 percent of smartphone users are interested in an application that uses Wi-Fi to improve cellular coverage.

Additional highlights from the online survey conducted May 2011 include:

HTC CFO says it's time to 'figure it out' with Apple

HTC vs. AppleHTC's CFO Winston Yung appears ready to make a deal with market rival and patent nemesis Apple. The Taiwanese company has had some rather harsh words for the Cupertino crew, and it hasn't seemed any more conciliatory after getting slapped by the ITC. That may be starting to change, as Yung told Bloomberg, "we [Apple and HTC] have to sit down and figure it out." He went on to say that the house that Sense built was open to discussions with Jobs and co. but did not venture to guess what a final agreement might look like. Of course, it's worth pointing out that this is absolutely standard practice, and we'd expect nothing less. In fact, HTC really only has two options here: plead for licensing cooperation, or go into gummy bear sales.

Mysterious Samsung shows up in dev center sporting Gingerbread and 1280 x 768 screen

SHV-E120S

Hello, and welcome to another edition of Mystery Cellphone Theater. This week's enigma comes to us courtesy of T Store, a Korean app market, where the Developer Center lists an unannounced Samsung device with the model number SHV-E120S. Now, we can't tell you much about the E120S, only that it reports to sport a WXGA screen (that's 1280 x 768), Gingerbread, and a single-core MSM8250 Snapdragon. Sammy has a Korea-only handset with the SHV-E110S tag and a more standard 800 x 480 screen, and the company has made no secret about its desire to push pixel density well beyond the 300ppi mark -- still, there's no guarantee this is in fact a phone. It very well may be a tablet, or just a strange report from an emulator. Regardless, we're intrigued, and keeping our fingers crossed for 4.3-inch HD display.

RIM axes 2000 jobs, changes managers in effort to halt decline

Just a month after a disgruntled employee accused RIM's managers of failing to make bold decisions, the latter have responded by boldly sacking 11 percent of their workforce. The company says it will notify affected employees in North America and some other countries this week. It also announced a number of changes to its executive team, with Thorsten Heins taking on the expanded role of COO, Product and Sales. Other personnel changes were generally confined to sales, marketing and operations, which leaves us wondering what, if anything, will change in the way RIM comes up with new products.

The LG Mobile Production Roadmap in a Snap

LG has a lot of mobile phones in store for their customers this year, aside from the Optimus Net and Optimus Pro, along with the Optimus 2X, Optimus 3D, and the Optimus Black. There is a mobile roadmap that shows the new phones, unofficially released.

First is the LG Prada K2. It will run on Android Gingerbread, and it will also have a 4.3-inch touch screen, with cameras at 8 megapixels at the back and 1.3 megapixels at the back. The LG Univa is the successor of the Optimus One, which would run at a 800 MHz processor, 3.5-inch touch screen, a 5-megapixel camera, with DLNA support and on Gingerbread. The LG Fantasy is the only Windows Mobile selection in the group. This may have Windows Mobile 7 Mango. Standing in between the Prada and the Univa is the LG Victor that has 1 GHz single-core processor, 5-megapixel cam at the back and a VGA cam on the front also on Gingerbread. LG E2 may be the wee version of the phones, only have 3 megapixels for its cam, and about 500-800Mhz for its processor.

Atrix gets Gingerbread update, sideloading support, new outlook on life

ATrix

Its evil cousin the Bionic may be lurking just around the bend, with its too-long sideburns and its crazy eyes, but that doesn't mean the Atrix 4G is ready to hang up its hat just yet. AT&T's wunderphone with the woven back is just now receiving a 2.3.4 update, bringing it all the sensuous flavors of Gingerbread and finally, finally, the ability to sideload apps. First, though, you'll need to the 161MB update, which is waiting for you at the other end of the source link below. No, really, it is -- but it's getting impatient. Go on, go say hello.

20th Century Fox to offer digital downloads for Android devices, Blu-ray purchase required

20th Century Fox is dipping its downloading toes into the 21st century's waters, releasing movies on Android in addition to good, old-fashioned Blu-ray. According to the Financial Times, retail discs of X-Men: First Class will direct owners to a website where they can sideload a digital version of the film onto their Android device of choice. Apparently some of the suits over at Fox caught wind of how popular Android tablets are getting, and now see them as complementary, not cannibalistic (remember that industry buzz kill?) Sure, right now you shouldn't expect any Netflix-sized library of titles, but perhaps we can all agree this is a step in the right download-to-own direction. Residents of the US, UK, Germany, and France will get the first crack at downloading the films. The rest of you can just stream and wait.

Android deals just got weird: free phones for pants, free flights for phones

Next time you're trying on a pair of (non musical) jeans, why not snag a free Android phone to help fill their roomy pockets? And while you're shopping for that big trip you've got planned, you can let "HTC Airlines" book that flight for you. Honest, it's no trouble at all. Well, it's a little trouble. Wet Seal's "try on some pants and get a free phone" deal comes attached to a two-year contract, and those flights? Still free, but only if you happen to be picking up your HTC Status or Salsa in Germany. You didn't expect them to offer a free ride to just anybody, anywhere, did you?

Foreseen Destiny of the Nokia 500 Fate

It has been destiny that the newest and freshest phones would be exposed, even before the unit’s release becomes official. Such is the fate of the Nokia 500 “Fate” when it has been seen totally exposed as an advertisement. Expected as it should be running on Symbian, thanks to a leak that showed it along with three others, including the Zeta, it also has other things to come with it such as an interchangeable body kit in red, black, and blue.

According to the ad, people will be expecting Nokia 500 to carry a 5-megapixel camera, with a speeding 1GHz processor, which should prove to be worth the small investment. Despite of the convincing features, it has been mentioned also that this is the “lowest end” of the 4-device release, along with 600 Cindy, 700 Zeta, and 701 Helen. If that is the case, then more Nokia fans will get excited on looking into Cindy and Helen, since Zeta has been overexposed already.

Dell quietly pulls the Streak to perform an update, might bring it back next month?

What Dell can give, it can taketh away. That's the story with the Streak, which has quietly vanished from retail as well as the outfit's online storefront. We first got wind of this when a tipster wrote in to say he had spoken to a company employee, who said the 5-inch Android tablet / phone had been discontinued. When we reached out to Dell's PR team to see what's up, we got the pat "Dell does not comment on rumors, speculation, or unannounced products." So then we called customer service, pretending to order one, and that's when things got interesting. The rep told us the Streak hasn't, in fact, been end-of-life'd; it's just been pulled from shelves while it receives an update. The gentleman couldn't say how severe the issue is, though he insists it has zilch to do with Android. Whatever it is, Dell isn't even accepting orders for the 5-inch Streak at the moment. If all goes according to plan, though, we're told it should go back on sale in early August.

[Thanks, Venkata]

AT&T Nexus S coming to Best Buy July 24th, available for $100 with contract

The Samsung Nexus S has been available with AT&T-compatible 3G bands for quite some time, but not everyone's keen on shelling out $600 for getting some NFC goodness and Rethinking Possible at the same time. Thankfully, the device is now "optimized" on the network and will be sold exclusively at Best Buy this Sunday for $100 with two-year contract. If you just simply cannot wait, you'll be able to pre-order it today online. The subsidized version will only be sold in black -- in contrast to the white unlocked version launched in April -- and from the looks of it, will not have HSPA+ connectivity. We'll be on the lookout for the device to show up on Best Buy's site, but in the meantime, check out the PR after the break.

Verizon's Xperia Play now on sale for $100, Crash Bandicoot spins in celebration

Getting your PlayStation-certified gaming fix on just got 50 percent cheaper. Verizon's cut the price of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play in half on its website, selling for $100 with contract only four months after being greeted with open arms. The price cut is a result of Big Red's "Back to School" promotion, though it's difficult to believe this one will come out the other end of the sale any costlier than this. Was this sudden reduction made to instigate a price war with AT&T now that it's introduced the model to its lineup? Or, is this a last-ditch effort to bolster lackluster sales before the Play is discontinued? It's hard to say -- given its meager selection of PlayStation Suite titles, we can't imagine that the product's flying off of shelves. Still, five Jacksons is much more reasonable for anyone who just has to have The Sims 3 on the go, right?

Smartphone Shipments to Reach One Billion Annually by 2016

A new report published by analyst firm Juniper Research forecasts that the number of global smartphone shipments will reach one billion per annum in 2016, up from 302 million in 2010.

Smartphones -- traditionally high-end handsets -- will make-up the majority of shipments in five years' time, as this type of device becomes available at lower price points. Competition amongst vendors offering premium smartphones is intense, and so Juniper believes the best opportunity for new players is through economy models (those with an unsubsidised retail value of $150 or less).

Gingerbread heads to T-Mobile myTouch 4G starting today, won't stop anytime soon

Looking to spice up your myTouch 4G? Don't move a muscle. Starting today, T-Mobile will begin taking Gingerbread out of the oven, so to speak, for a limited number of users, with the the majority of owners to see it in the weeks ahead. Included in the update is the latest Swype build and compatibility with Exchange 2010 -- along with fixes for Bluetooth, a more stable and responsive display, improved domestic roaming, saving from the messages inbox, and the usual "other" software improvements. The company also reminds subscribers that it's unable to push the update manually, so you'll just have to wait your turn. But in the meantime, you can get all those awesome cookie decorations ready. Huzzah!

Dan Hesse: Sprint's not following Virgin's tiered data movement, but 'nothing is guaranteed forever'

Without a doubt, it's the 800 pound gorilla in the carrier realm: will Sprint follow AT&T, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless down the woeful tiered data route, laced with pain, confusion and general awfulness? We asked Sprint CEO Dan Hesse that very question today at Sprint's campus, and the answer wasn't exactly heartening. He stated that people are simply willing to pay a price premium (when it comes to rate plans) for something that's just dead simple -- something that they don't have to think about when they use. He (rightly) admitted that most average consumers have no concept of what a gigabyte is, or how long it takes to use one up, and that's why the outfit's unlimited plans are still striking a chord -- and in fact, more so now than ever with its three main rivals giving it an even stronger differentiator.

When asked whether Sprint would eventually have no other option but to switch to tiered data plans if heavy users begin to come over in droves, Hesse replied that having enough bandwidth to efficiently go around "could be an issue," and while it's working diligently with OEMs and app developers in order to implement things like WiFi offload, we were told that "nothing is guaranteed forever." We specifically asked if the recent tiered testing implemented at Virgin Mobile (which runs on Sprint's network) was an early indication that Sprint was also leaning this way, and Dan was steadfast in his denial. According to him, the postpaid and prepaid sectors are markedly different beasts, and it's not reasonable to consider that Sprint will follow Virgin's footsteps. Moral of the story? Sprint's clinging to unlimited for as long as it can, but we get the impression that a transition is imminent -- even if it's still a few years out.

Take the future on a journey – Sennheiser presents the new CXC 700 ear-canal phones with NoiseGard digital

Take the future on a journey Sennheiser presents the new CXC 700 ear canal phones with NoiseGard digital Take the future on a journey Sennheiser presents the new CXC 700 ear canal phones with NoiseGard digital

Sennheiser CXC 700, Travel Line, ear canal phone

With the CXC 700, audio specialist Sennheiser is expanding its successful Travel Line with the addition of a set of ear-canal phones with active noise cancellation. As a completely new feature, the innovative NoiseGard / digital system offers travellers a choice of three noise-cancelling profiles – optimised for the wide range of surrounding noise encountered while travelling. This pioneering digital technology enables frequent flyers and travel enthusiasts to ‘switch off’ even better and enjoy Sennheiser’s proven top-quality sound.

Rail noise, roaring engines, screaming turbines and blaring loudspeaker announcements: travellers are always surrounded by irritating noise. Wherever you are, the new CXC 700 adapts to the environment at the push of a button.

One of three noise-cancelling profiles can be selected to adapt NoiseGard to the current surroundings. Mode 1 absorbs low-frequency noise in particular (100 to 400 Hertz), such as engine noise from trains, buses or small passenger planes. Mode 2 focuses on cancelling noise in the medium frequency range (400 to 3,000 Hertz), which is caused above all by air-conditioning systems in large passenger aircraft or office buildings. Mode 3 has a particularly wide frequency range (100 to 3,000 Hertz), and combines the noise-cancelling effect in the medium and low-frequency ranges. As a result, background noise with different noise components, such as that which occurs at airports, railway stations or underground stations, can be effectively suppressed, although with a slightly lower noise-cancelling performance than in the first two modes.

“NoiseGard / digital is the consistent further development of Sennheiser’s analogue NoiseGard technology,” explained Daniel Chee, Product Manager for the Sennheiser Travel Line. “The possibility to select one of three different modes that are optimised for different environments considerably improves the noise-cancelling effect. Precise filters generate a result that is up to five times better than that of the analogue system.”

Perfect sound wherever you go

To ensure that you can enjoy top-quality sound while travelling – even when the NoiseGard function is deactivated – Sennheiser’s proven acoustics guarantees a balanced, detailed sound image with a frequency response of 20 to 21,000 Hertz. Whether with or without NoiseGard, the CXC 700 promises the same perfect sound quality at all times. This means that you can still listen to music or enjoy a film even if the battery is flat. The earphones are perfectly matched to portable audio and video players and are also optimised for connection to in-flight entertainment systems.

First-class comfort

Due to its compact size and ergonomic design, the CXC 700 not only fits into even the lightest luggage, it is also comfortable to wear when sleeping. Travellers can either drift off into another world while listening to relaxing music or enjoy perfect peace and quiet with the NoiseGard function activated.

The CXC 700 is operated using a control unit integrated into the cable. The control unit is used not only to select the three NoiseGard profiles and to regulate the volume but also to activate the Sennheiser TalkThrough function. This allows users to conduct a conversation with the person sitting next to them or with the cabin staff without the need to remove their earphones. A particularly useful feature: changing between the NoiseGard profiles and activation of the TalkThrough function are indicated by both an acoustic and a visual signal.

The high-end ear-canal phones are, of course, also equipped with all extras for relaxed and trouble-free travelling. The CXC 700 comes with a set of ear adapters in three different sizes to guarantee perfect fit and optimum passive noise attenuation. An in-flight adapter and a 6.35 mm jack plug adapter are also included to enable the earphones to be connected not only to portable players but also to in-flight entertainment systems. The 1.6 metre long cable offers sufficient freedom of movement in all situations. In addition to a small carrying case, the set also includes a diaphragm protector, a cleaning tool and an AAA battery.

The Sennheiser Group, with its headquarters in Wedemark near Hanover, Germany, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of microphones, headphones and wireless transmission systems. The family-owned company, which was established in 1945, recorded sales of around €468 million in 2010. Sennheiser employs more than 2,100 people worldwide, and has manufacturing plants in Germany, Ireland and the USA. The company is represented worldwide by subsidiaries in France, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark (Nordic), Russia, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Japan, China, Canada, Mexico and the USA, as well as by long-term trading partners in many other countries. Also part of the Sennheiser Group are Georg Neumann GmbH, Berlin (studio microphones and monitor loudspeakers), and the joint venture Sennheiser Communications A/S (headsets for PCs, offices and call centres).

FDA Outlines Oversight of Mobile Medical Applications

fda.gif

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced it is seeking input on its proposed oversight approach for certain mobile applications specific to medicine or health care called mobile medical applications ("apps") that are designed for use on smartphones and other mobile computing devices. This approach encourages the development of new apps, focuses only on a select group of applications and will not regulate the sale or general consumer use of smartphones or tablets.

Today, mobile medical applications or "mobile medical apps," include a variety of functions, ranging from monitoring calorie intake, helping people maintain a healthy weight, and allowing doctors to view a patient’s radiology images on their mobile communications device. According to Research2Guidance 2010, 500 million smartphone users worldwide will be using a health care application by 2015.
