Free application will allow people to donate their time to charity and is backed by Prime Minister David Cameron
Orange today (March 31) launched a mobile application that allows people to “donate” five minutes of their time to charity.
The application called ‘Do Some Good’ follows a survey commissioned by the operator which found that 25 per cent of people said they would rather donate their own time to charity than money.
It is backed by Prime Minister David Cameron and allows users to choose 12 charities to which they can donate their time.
Once the application is downloaded, users can choose from actions which will benefit the charities in question.
These range from completing surveys or recommending a a green space for renovation by ‘guerrilla gardeners’.
Speaking about the launch of the application Cameron said: “Millions of people who don’t currently volunteer would like to do so if they had the time and information to make it as easy as possible.
“Do Some Good is a great way of tapping into this huge pool of untapped volunteering energy.”
Everything Everywhere chief executive Tom Alexander (pictured) said the potential for the application was “huge”.
He said: “This landmark mobile volunteering project is a fantastic opportunity for us in our time pressured society to use mobile technology as a force for good.
“Making a significant change starts with small steps – and we hope that by making volunteering an everyday activity, we’ll mobilise people to give previously untapped time to change the face of volunteering in the UK.”
The application is currently available to download for free on Apple’s App Store and will become available on other platforms later in the year.
