Untethered Jailbreak for Verizon iPhone Now Available

Not long after the latest update for the Verizon iPhone, the first untethered jailbreak is now available for Verizon iOS version 4.4.2.7 via Sn0wbreeze version 2.6.1. The jailbreak is also available on Cydia for those currently on the redSn0w tethered jailbreak solution via the Verizon Untether for 4.2.7 package. Below a statement from the developer, ih8Sn0w:

“sn0wbreeze 2.6.1: Verizon love!

Well, after i0n1c released his untether exploit for 4.3.1, Apple shortly pushed out 4.3.2 AND 4.2.7. i0n1c’s payload was ported over to 4.3.2 in a short period of time but not 4.2.7. This made Verizon users very frustrated.

I originally ordered a Verizon iPhone 4 for my upcoming SHSH blobs dumper. Then I + many others on twitter realized that an untether was not available for 4.2.7. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been sick and didn’t do much, but today I was finally able to get the strength to work on this Verizon untether. Since i0n1c’s payload is not easily reversible, I went to previous exploits.

After trying, pod2g’s + posixninja’s kernel exploit for 4.2.x is STILL in

4.2.7! After some more work, I managed to get this thing untethered! So, this new release includes that new payload to untether + jailbreak 4.2.7.

For users who currently have a tethered 4.2.7 jailbreak via redsn0w (by pointing to the 4.2.6 ipsw), I was able to contact my buddy @pushfix. Hes managed to put together a Cydia package to untether your currently tethered

Verizon 4.2.7 phone.

* Just add the Cydia repo: http://cydia.pushfix.info

* Install the Cydia Package “Verizon Untether for 4.2.7

* Reboot.

* Enjoy.”

Droid Bionic Release by Motorola Form Factor Style

For those of you that have been waiting patiently for the next big Droid smartphone to release, news is that the Droid Bionic from Motorola is being prepared for a release and that it may come with a more aesthetically pleasing form factor.

The Droid Bionic was initially unveiled at CES 2011 earlier this year and received some negative feedback. However, it would appear that Motorola has taken this feedback onboard and have decided to make some enhancements to the device.

Now according to a screen shot coming to us from Droid-Life by way of Ubergizmo, it would appear that the Motorola’s Droid Bionic LTE smartphone will be undergoing a number of changes, among them is “an improved form factor”. The other enhancements to the smartphone mentioned in the screen shot are “expanded features and functionality”, all to make this an even better consumer experience.

We did an article yesterday on the ‘Droid Bionic Being Purged from Motorola Website’ – see full article here. However, this screen shot appears to confirm that the device with it enhancements will be making an appearance this summer.

So now, all we need do is sit back and wait to see the emergence of the Motorola Droid Bionic released on Verizon Wireless later this summer and let us hope that there are no delays, like those that we experienced with the Droid Charge, and any outage issues will have been resolved by Verizon. Please give us your thoughts on the new enhancements to the Motorola Droid Bionic below.

New Google Docs Android App with OCR

Many users of smartphones will use their device to access, edit and share content whilst on the go. Well to aid in this pursuit Google have released a new Android app called ‘Google Docs’ that will make the management of documents a lot easier, the app also includes the ability to convert images into text.

The document editing is still carried out exclusively on the web, but with the added functionality of this Android app, the user’s experience of Google Docs on their mobile device is greatly improved. Google accepts that documents are meant for sharing and therefore, they have added support for widgets that can easily access stored contacts. People could be tempted away from using traditional office suite software, with these kinds of improvements coming in.

Information on this app come to us by way of googlemobile.blogspot.com via VentureBeat and goes on to add, of all the additions perhaps the most notable is the Optical Character Recognition (OCR), which has the ability to convert words found in images into a document with editable text. However, this feature may not sit well with the old school bookstores, which invite customers in to lounge around sampling the books and magazines.

This Google Docs app is consistent with the company’s overall strategy of enticing new users with the seamless integration of all its services into the Android platform, thus possibly making Android devices more desirable to new users.

At present, the Google Docs app is only available to devices that operate Android 2.1 or higher. So why not visit Android Market, install this app free of charge and then come back to tell us what you think.

Verizon’s 4G Network Repaired, Mostly Working Again

Good news, everyone!

The Not-So-Great Verizon 4G Outage of 2011 is over! If Sony and Verizon are battling for the best outage of April here, we’re going to have to go ahead and side with Verizon. Only down for one day and they didn’t hand all of our personal information over to hackers? High fives, Big Red!

As for what caused the outage: gnomes. At least, that’s our best guess — Verizon isn’t saying beyond “Our network engineers and vendors quickly identified the issue and solved it”. (Heads up, 3G/4G Laptop Modem users: you might see some weird delays when jumping from 3G to 4G. Verizon is working on it.)

Samsung Droid Charge Release Delayed By Verizon

For the Android faithful that were expecting Verizon to make the Samsung Droid Charge available for purchase as of today the 28th, it appears you are in for a disappointment as word is the Samsung Droid Charge release has now been delayed.

According to the guys over at Engadget they have obtained a Verizon internal email, which apparently says that the release of the Samsung Droid Charge is delayed due to “unexpected delays” and Verizon hasn’t given a new date for the launch.

Word is the Droid Charge could have been delayed due to Verizon’s 4G LTE network outage; however apparently the guys have heard that the 4G LTE network is gradually being restored, but say that it is unlikely the Samsung Droid Charge will release today.

Unfortunate for those that are waiting to snap up the Android Samsung Droid Charge today but hopefully the Big Red will get their LTE sorted and push out the 4G smartphone as soon as possible. Anyone annoyed they can’t get the Droid Charge today?

Windows Phone and BlackBerry struggle to attract developer attention

Developer Interest Chart

We're taking this with a grain of salt, since it applies only to users of the cross-platform Appcelerator Titanium development environment, but it appears that Windows Phone 7 is facing an increasingly uphill battle for mobile mind-share. At this point it should go without saying that a platform lives and dies by its developers and, according to Appcelerator, they're growing less and less interested in creating apps for Microsoft's smartphone OS. Only 29-percent of devs responded to the company's quarterly survey that they were "very interested" in putting their wares on WP7, a fall of 7 points from last quarter and far less than market leaders Android and iOS. News is even worse for RIM, which saw a fall of 11-points in developer interest for BlackBerry, and now trails the folks from Redmond. Again, this survey is based only on the responses of 2,760 developers using a particular product, so we'd refrain from calling the results incontrovertible. Still, it reinforces something that even a casual observer could discern: BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 have a tough row to hoe. Two more charts after the break.

LG Optimus Big brings a 4.3-inch NOVA display and 1GHz dual-core to the superphone party

What's big, mostly white, and set for a Korean launch tomorrow? That's right, the LG Optimus Big! This 4.3-inch whopper, LG's largest handset to date, touts a 1GHz dual-core processor, a slightly skinned Android 2.2 as its OS, HDMI output, a 5 megapixel camera, and 16GB of built-in storage. That spec sheet sounds mighty close to the elder Optimus 2X that launched earlier in the year, though a couple of items have also been borrowed from the still unreleased Optimus Black. They are the NOVA display, which can crank all the way up to 700 nits of brightness, and WiFi Direct, which allows for wireless inter-device communication without the need for an intermediary WiFi access point. This big, delicious spec sandwich is hitting its home market on April 28th, but there's sadly no word on when and where else it might show up. Just keep an eye out for it, shouldn't be that hard to spot.

Skyfire Launches 4.0 Version Of Its Popular Android Mobile Browser With Eight New Killer Features

Skyfire, maker of the award-winning and popular mobile browser, announces the release of Skyfire 4.0 for Android – its highly anticipated next-generation Android browser. Skyfire 4.0 for Android allows users to personalize their SkyBar toolbar, while adding eight new SkyBar features. While the basic browser and toolbar will remain free to Android users, Skyfire is also introducing a premium in-app purchase to enable its Video feature, which draws on Skyfire’s cloud-based servers to optimize videos from across the web. As a thank you to over 3 million early beta users of the app, all existing users will be “grandfathered” in for free access for the lifetime of their device.

Skyfire’s SkyBar toolbar is now scrollable and customizable, allowing for a larger and more personalized number of features to be positioned on the toolbar. Beyond the ‘Video’, ‘Facebook’, ‘Fireplace’, ‘Popular’, ‘Ideas’ & ‘Like’ buttons, Skyfire has added full Twitter, Groupon and Google Reader integration, a ‘Share’ button, Sports, News and Finance feeds, and a ‘Settings’ button.

Skyfire for Android is one of the most popular applications in the Android Market and has seen over 3 million downloads since launching in April 2010. The mobile browser was upgraded to critical acclaim in November 2010 with integrated social media and Facebook capabilities, and the app currently has a user rating of 4.5 stars out of a possible five stars, based on tens of thousands of reviews in the Android Market. This latest update will continue to build on Skyfire’s strong track record of innovation.

With v4.0, Skyfire for Android will begin offering its video optimization as an optional $2.99 premium feature, unlocked via an in-app purchase after a three day free trial. The feature pays for itself for most users around the world by allowing users to watch more video with less data usage (where users have capped or metered data plans), as well as increasing battery life.

Skyfire is offering the video optimization feature at no additional charge for a limited time to all Verizon Wireless customers who download Skyfire 4.0 for Android. Skyfire can be found in the Verizon channel of the Android Market.

Skyfire 4.0 for Android, including the video optimization feature, will remain free for all of the over 3 million beta testers around the globe who have used the app to date, in gratitude for their support in helping Skyfire become one of the most popular apps in the Android Market.

“With Skyfire 4.0 for Android, we’re enabling users to customize their browser toolbar to fit their interests, from sports, to social networks, to finance, news, and local deals,” said Jeff Glueck, CEO of Skyfire. “While the basic browser will remain free, with the launch of Google’s Android In-App purchase platform, the time has come to make our video cloud acceleration service a premium feature that reflects the investment we make to support each user in our cloud. We deliver state-of-the art web video tuned to your current mobile connection speed, saving 75% on average data loads. For users who enjoy web video, or who are on metered data, the service can pay for itself in the first month of use.”

New Features in Skyfire 4.0 for Android include:

Customizable SkyBar – Skyfire’s toolbar is now configurable and expandable, enabling users to create their own flavor of Skyfire experience. With the new scrollable SkyBar, users now have access to fourteen Skyfire features and have the ability to enable, disable and position each button as they see fit.

New SkyBar Features – Skyfire has added eight new features:

Twitter – Login to the ‘Twitter’ Button to have one-touch access to Twitter streams. Tweet, search, and check in with the Twittersphere without leaving the Skyfire browser. (And yes, watch videos shared on Twitter with just one click.)

Groupon – With the ‘Groupon’ Button, the SkyBar is now delivering nearby deals so you can do a quick check on the deal of the day at all times.

Share – Easily share websites, articles, pictures & videos with the touch of the ‘Share’ button, a feature previously accessible through the Skyfire menu.

Google Reader – Use the ‘Google Reader’ Button to keep up with feeds from your favorite sites. Google Reader keeps you in the know by constantly checking your favorite news sites and blogs for new content.

Sports, News & Finance – Three new buttons, ‘Sports’, ‘News’ & ‘Finance’, have been added to the SkyBar to bring one-touch access to the latest events.

Settings – The ‘Settings’ button could easily be labeled the ‘Customize’ button. Use this to enable, disable or position SkyBar features to your personal preferences.

General Tips – We’ve added a host of new in-browser tips, tricks & tutorials to help users get them most out of browsing with Skyfire.

iOS 5 Being Tested With Apps by Apple and AT&T

We have a little bit of information concerning Apple’s next iPhone and Apple iPad operating system for your consideration today, apparently the word is Apple and their largest US carrier of iOS devices, AT&T are testing iOS 5.

According to an article over on 9to5 Mac, App Store developer FutureTap announced via their Twitter account that they have got the first crash report from a device running iOS 5, which means that Apple is field testing iOS 5 using apps from the App Store.

FutureTap tweeted…” Just received the first iOS 5.0 crash report. MKUserLocationBreadCrumb sounds interesting.”

Furthermore FutureTap also delivered a screenshot to the guys that shows iOS 5 hits from their WhereTo app with for of said iOS 5 hits originating from AT&T. Thus is would appear that both Apple and AT&T are testing out iOS 5 which is expected to be officially unveiled during WWDC 2011 in June.

New HTC Rider Android Smartphone Pictured

Looks like there may be a new Android smartphone in the making in the HTC camp that will be known as the HTC Rider, and said HTC Rider has apparently found its way into the hands of a Chinese website, but word is this one isn’t a clone.

According to the guys over at Ubergizmo, by way of Uberphones, Chinese site 911 Sniper Blog somehow got hold of the HTC Rider and posted a rather blurred snap of the device, but nothing else.

The guys reckon the HTC Rider looks similar to the HTC EVO 3D with the exception that this device has a chrome grill over the earpiece and a front facing camera to the right, and it’s not too clear whether that red trim is the colour of the Android handset or if it’s a case.

Apparently the rumour doing the rounds is that the HTC Rider is actually the European version of the HTC EVO 3D, but that at the moment is simply speculation, but no doubt given time HTC will get around to officially taking the wraps of this new device.

Verizon's LTE network takes the night off, leaves a bunch of Thunderbolt users bewildered

Is your fancy new phone lacking that certain extra G that makes it special? Worry not, it's not just your device, Verizon's entire LTE network seems to be having problems as outages have been reported from across the US. We tested our own Thunderbolt in San Francisco this morning and it was indeed making do with only 3G connectivity. It's important to note that Verizon's 3G network seems to be ticking along quite alright, it's just 4G service that's down at the moment. Some folks have reported losing both 3G and 4G connectivity, but that's owing to a documented issue with 3G provisioning on the Thunderbolt -- we've noted the way to overcome that problem in a previous post. For now, just enjoy your regular-speed mobile internet until the super-fast stuff is fixed and back up.

Update: The Verizon Wireless Twitter account has confirmed the issue, and that the company's network engineers are "working to resolve quickly."

Update 2: As of 4:13pm ET Verizon has determined the cause and is "working with major vendors to restore connections." Still no ETA for a fix.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Verizon has 'determined the cause' of LTE outage, working to restore service

Verizon has 'determined the cause' of LTE outage, working to restore serviceYeah, we know, 3G data is so last year. If you've already made the jump to LTE and are totally bummed about today's outage, know that there's a fix coming. We have an official statement from Jeffrey Nelson from VZW Corporate Communications, who indicates that the company has "determined the cause of our issue" and is "working with our major vendors to restore connections." We're guessing that doesn't actually mean plugging something back in, but maybe it does. The full statement is after the break, but what you won't find is an ETA on when things will be live again.

Show full PR text

We are aware of an issue with 4G LTE data connections and our network engineers are working to resolve this quickly. We have determined the cause of our issue and are working with our major vendors to restore connections.

* 4G LTE Smartphones will still be able to make calls.

* Customers are temporarily unable to activate any 4G LTE devices.

* Please note: Customers may experience a 1XRTT data connection during this time.

* After determining the cause of our 4G LTE network connection issue, we are continuing to work to restore connections.

* We expect to see the network restore on a market-by-market basis. Timing and additional details will be provided as they become available.

Verizon freezes Droid Charge launch indefinitely, blaming 'unexpected delays' (update: LTE back)

Can't say we're surprised by this, but turns out Verizon's decided to delay the launch of its Samsung Droid Charge -- originally scheduled for today -- at the very last minute. According to an internal email we obtained, the blame's on "unexpected delays" and no new date has yet been set. This makes sense, considering it wouldn't do Verizon much good to launch a new 4G Android when its LTE service is still down (for over 24 hours and still counting). Ah well, this 4.3-incher better be worth the wait.

[Thanks, Anonymous]

Update: We're hearing reports that LTE is gradually being restored across the states, and our own Myriam Joire also sees 4G connection in San Francisco. That said, at this stage it's unlikely that the Droid Charge will resume launch today.

Supreme Court Sides With AT&T on Arbitration Clauses

The US Supreme Court has rendered a decision in favor of AT&T on the usage of contractually enforced third-party arbitration for settling disputes with customers, greatly reducing the power of class action lawsuits by forcing individuals to fight disputes on an individual basis as spelled out in the service agreement. The 5-4 decision was entered via party lines, with Justice Scalia stating that using class action suits to settle customer arbitration issues do more harm by violating existing federal statutes that favor arbitration.

The Supreme Court decision reverses two previous lower court decisions filed in the state of California that sided with consumers on the usage of class action suits to settle disputes with the carrier, as California has its own set of statutes regarding consumer protection and litigation and are considered some of the most pro-consumer statutes in the country.

Square gets financial backing from Visa, asks to see some ID

Everything's coming up Jack Dorsey these days. Last week Apple started stocking Square's iPhone credit card readers in its 235 US retail locations, and now, according to Reuters, Visa has put its plastic where its mouth is. The credit card giant has invested in the personal payments startup, scoring itself a spot on Square's advisory board in the process. No word on how much Visa is actually dropping on the company, but one thing stands to reason: it probably didn't make the deposit via Verifone. If you would like to invest in a Square reader, it'll cost you a lot less -- the company is still offering smartphone plug-ins for free on its site.

Google Docs gets an Android app, we go hands-on with tiny spreadsheets (video)

Staring at spreadsheets crushed down to unreadable sizes on a 4-inch phone screen is far from pleasurable but, clearly there is a demand. In fact, we've been clamoring for a proper Google Docs app for ages, even though sometimes we're not entirely sure why. It was only a matter of time before Google finally got around to appeasing us mobile workaholics and put an official app in the Android Market. Well, our masochistic prayers were answered -- the Mighty Goog unleashed the new, native Google Docs for Android app and we rushed on over to the Market, clicked the install button, and gave it a whirl.

Google Docs for Android hands-on

Let's get this out of the way first: there are no offline editing capabilities. The actual editor is just the mobile web app embedded in a neat, little, native Android package. If you try to open an document without an internet connection you'll just get an cutesy error message. If you do have a connection (and exceedingly accurate fingers) you can open and edit your text documents and spreadsheets, but presentations are strictly read-only.

Google has provided more ways to filter and browse your docs than you could possibly need. You can pull them all up in a single list, narrow it down by collection (which once upon a time Google called "tags"), pull up your starred files, view only specific document types... the list goes on and on. And if all that scrolling and tapping doesn't catch your fancy there is an impressively fast search-as-you-type function.

We tested the app on a Xoom as well as a Droid X and, while we're happy to report it runs, it's certainly not optimized for Honeycomb. Launching the app presents you with the same single pane interface you get on the phone blown-up to tablet proportions. Instead of a list of collections on the left and files on the right you just end up with vast swaths of empty space. This is doubly frustrating when you attempt to edit a document. The tablet keyboard may be easier to type on than a phone (and easier still is a Bluetooth one) but, it makes little difference when selecting a line of text to edit or manipulating spreadsheet filters requires the fingers of a five-year-old.

The two big advantages of the native app are the homescreen widget and the ability to create a document from a photo. The widget is simple enough and lets you open the app, view your starred docs, or create new ones. One of the ways you can create a new document is by pointing your smartphone's camera at a bit of text and snapping a pic. The image is then uploaded to Google, where the Mountain View crew works some of its OCR magic that it's been perfecting under the guise of Google Goggles. The results are decidedly mixed. If you don't have steady hands don't expect much -- even slightly out of focus photos produce a doc with no text. If you can manage to score a perfectly clear image though, Docs does an admirable job of deciphering them.

If you find yourself constantly visiting the mobile Google Docs just to look up information in previously created documents and spreadsheets there is no reason not to install this app -- it's more than serviceable for reading docs. The lack of offline editing is extremely disappointing and unless you've got a tripod for your phone the OCR will prove to be rather unreliable. Still, the app is free, so what do you have to lose?

iPhone 4S Pictured, Possibly iPhone 5

The speculation over the next generation iOS smartphone continues and now we have what is apparently leaked images of what is being called the iPhone 4S hitting the net waves, and apparently said iPhone 4S runs the new iOS seen previously on video.

The pictures of this iPhone 4S come our way courtesy of the iPhone Download Blog and by way of Mic Gadget who don’t actually say where or how they came by the pictures, so there is a possibility it could be a mockup.

However info on this iPhone 4S seems to match up with previous info on the iPhone 5, and as we know, Apple tends to put a name to their smartphones that doesn’t always match up with the reported name so the iPhone 4S could be Apple’s moniker for the iPhone 5, although as usual that is of course speculation.

The new images seem to run along similar line as previous images reported by the BGR, and seem to support the info that the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S whichever you wish to call it will come with a larger display of roughly 3.7-inches.

Having said that, you should for the moment treat all this as rumour as there isn’t really any real evidence that these images are of the real deal next generation iPhone.

There have been numerous rumours over the iPhone 5 in the past ranging from being similar to the iPod Touch, to the iPhone 5 having NFC, to an old school design.

But what do our reader’s think about the name iPhone 4S? Let’s face it Apple went with iPhone 3GS so it could be that iPhone 4S is the next handset. Also notably the images are of a white version so could this mean that Apple will deliver a white iPhone 5/4S when they finally get round to releasing the thing?

What are your thoughts, do you think this Phone 4S is a fake or close to the real design?

Apple confirms it's working on a traffic service, moving away from Google Maps?

It wasn't the main thrust of its "Q&A on Location Data" this morning, but Apple did also make a bit of news while it tried to ease those privacy concerns about how it's handling your data. The company says it "is now collecting anonymous traffic data to build a crowd-sourced traffic database," and that it's hoping to provide iPhone users with an "improved traffic service in the next couple of years." It didn't divulge much more than that, unfortunately, but that little detail lines up with some other navigation-related developments out of the company as of late. It acquired web mapping firm Poly9 last July (in addition to Google Maps rival Placebase in late 2009), and just last month a couple of job postings revealed that it was looking for folks to "radically improve" the iOS Maps experience. Add all those together and it's starting to look an awful lot like a shift away from Google Maps in favor of an all-Apple solution -- much like how the company relied on Skyhook until it could roll its own WiFi geolocation service.

iPhone Tracker App for Child Immunisation

I’m sure Apple are getting fed up with the word ‘tracker’ being associated with their devices, but on this occasion they have nothing to worry about, as it refers to an iOs app that helps parents in Ireland monitor their child’s immunisation.

It can be very hard for parents to keep note on when their baby is due its vaccines, especially within the in first 12 months of the child’s birth when multiple vaccines are due. However, to ease what is an essential but challenging task the Irishhealth.com have developed the Child Immunisation Tracker app.

This app was developed to help parents living in Ireland ensure that their new family member is protected against a range of life-threatening diseases to which young children and especially infants are most susceptible. When vaccines are due, the app sends ‘push’ reminders to your iPhone.

The app provides lots of information on childhood diseases and the vaccines used to prevent them and has an exclusive feature that, in the event of a disease outbreak e.g. measles or swine flu, Irishhealth.com can send an instant ‘alert’ via the app to all parents. The app also includes reminders for 12-13 year old schoolgirls of the Cervical Cancer vaccine, which was recently launched in Ireland.

It takes no more than two minutes to set up a new child’s record and each record can be customized with the child’s photo if you wish, and their blood group (if known) as well as recording your GP’s phone number, so you can call your GP directly from the app and set up your next appointment. There is also a ‘live’ feed, which informs parents of any breaking news stories on child health.

The data used in this service is based on the current guidelines from the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland and is only intended for parents of children in the Republic of Ireland. So if you live in Ireland and want to keep on top of your child’s immunisation, head on over to iTunes and download this app, which is available free of charge thanks to the support of Aptamil.

HTC Thunderbolt Battles T-Mobile G2x in Comparison Fight

We have a comparison battle between Android on T-Mobile and Android on Verizon for your consideration below, a two-part video comparison pitting the T-Mobile G2x in a face off against the HTC Thunderbolt.

The HTC Thunderbolt against the G2x comparison videos come our way courtesy of Aaron Baker over at Phone Dog who digs deep into the comparison between the two Android smartphones over a nice long 28 minutes in total.

Both smartphones came out to play sporting Android 2.2 Froyo, but the T-Mobile G2x offers a 1GHz Tegra 2 dual-core processor and 4-inch touch screen, while the HTC Thunderbolt offers a 1Ghz single-core Snapdragon processor and a 4.3-inch touch screen, while both deliver an 8 megapixel camera.

The T-Mobile G2x can play nice on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ (4G) network while the HTC Thunderbolt plays nice on Verizon’s 4G LTE, but can one of the smartphones out pace the other and come out on top?

Well you should know by now I’m not going to tell you the outcome, but let you skip on down to mash the play buttons to find out for yourself, and feel free to let us know if you agree or disagree…enjoy.

Shebang booms with new energy

After a roller-coaster ride, Shebang’s growth has soared 139 per cent in three years. Boss Iain Humphrey tells Paul Withers the story behind the journey to seventh ranking in the Tech Track 100

There is an unquestionable air of excitement from the staff inside the walls of Daventry-based Shebang.

As well as securing several lucrative deals, including those with Samsung, Asda, Costco and Viking Direct, the company was in September ranked seventh in the Tech Track 100, having achieved 136.58 per cent growth between 2006 and 2009, with sales topping 60 million. A figure it expects to repeat.

So it’s understandable group managing director Iain Humphrey is in a buoyant mood.

But like any good businessman, Humphrey refuses to rest on past successes, and has recently restructured the shape of the organisation, splitting it into six divisions operating under the Shebang Technologies Group name in a bid to fuel further growth.

Humphrey says the move was designed to show Shebang is not just a distributor, with the changes enabling clarity on incoming revenues and ensuring it puts itself out to the right market with the right banner. He adds that he’ll have a good idea later this year as to how this restructure is working, and will help decide where he needs to focus his efforts.

Franchise plans
Humphrey is keen to discuss Shebang’s Purple Partnership franchising operation. It’s an area of the business he earmarked as his main focus for 2011, labelling it in these pages as “best by a mile”, when compared to other players.

Shebang owns 58 stores under the Go Mobile brand and has 51 franchise shops trading, with four more due to open by the end of this month, in Cleveland in the north-east, Bedminster in Bristol, and in Welsh towns Aberystwyth and Brecon.

It will look to sell its current portfolio of shops, bar a couple, to franchise partners. Humphrey is targeting 200 stores nationwide by the end of the year, and has identified up to 80 towns in which the company could have a retail presence.

Every new shop comes with a store refit, and eight of these are being lined up for the next two months. The new look will see interactive screens displaying Go Mobile’s latest offers; handsets connecting to screens that display specifications when the phone is lifted off its cradle; as well as special offers projected onto the floor each shop.

Humphrey says: “We’ve highlighted 80 towns where we feel there is room for a mobile phone store to dominate. Our intention is to grow through franchisees and not through direct store-ownership. There is a distinct possibility we’ll have 200 stores by the end of this year, but there is a lot of work to be done to get it up to scratch with the right technology and having the right look and feel for customers.”

He continues: “It’s very difficult to run retail nowadays, with the margins available and the number of people moving to 24-month contracts.

“To get the right model and make money when you’re running company stores, you have to have multiple members of staff, because you’re a bigger organisation.

“It’s probably an additional 4,500 cost per month than what you need to have in a franchise operation. A franchise partner will earn 100,000 a year over a five-year period if he works really hard and services the customers within the brand guidelines on behalf of the networks.”

Better coverage
In February, Fonehouse managing director Clive Bayley told Mobile News of his ambitions to become the third-largest retailer in the UK by the end of next year. It would achieve this by opening a further 120 stores to take its total store count to 170, using its own franchising operation to drive momentum. That number, at the moment, would trump what Go Mobile has on the high street.

The Fonehouse statement came with the company seeking to capitalise on its raised profile after featuring in Channel 4 documentary Mary Portas: Secret Shopper. The show detailed a store refit programme Fonehouse itself is undergoing, to provide customers with a more interactive experience and to create a ‘sit down and relax mentality’.

Humphrey claims Go Mobile’s position is not under threat, even having a dig at the speed at which Fonehouse is rolling-out its franchise programme. He also claims Go Mobile has better nationwide coverage, with its ability to sell the Apple iPhone and sales systems it has in place as key differentiators.

“I love competition,” he says. “We’re new into the franchise proposition, but have plenty of experience in retail, similar to what Clive has. He’s been selling his franchise idea for a few years but it’s only growing in small numbers.

“We don’t allow any of our stores or anyone within the Go Mobile brand to do unlocking or handset repairs. It’s all about operating as you would from a network-owned store and making sure we deliver that service to the customers.

“With Purple Partnership, we’ve certainly exercised our ability to deliver far better on behalf of the supplier partner and ensure our franchisees are at the required standard. That means our partnership will continue to deliver quality results, profit and give them a far better future from that brand than other people.

“We’re able to sell the iPhone, which generates a tremendous amount of sales. You’ll see from the way we develop that franchise in the future, with the store and technology fits we’re now doing and the way we’re working together with our partners to ensure they understand on a daily basis where their cashflow and profit and loss is likely to be.

“We offer a full EPOS (electronic point of sale) retail system. We’re going to work together and enjoy success together and we’re going to go through pain together, so it has a far more personal touch than others.”

Sponsorships
Go Mobile’s branding and sponsorship deals are aiding its ambition to be a leading player in mobile retail, with a new partnership within the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), which Humphrey believes will significantly accelerate this ambition.

It has spent 500,000 to be the title sponsor of a team competing in the 2011 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, with two Chevrolet Cruzes run by Tech-Speed Motorsport covered in Go Mobile signage.

During each race day Go Mobile will have stands where information on the locations of its stores, as well as sales offers in them, will be given out. All customers buying a contract handset from Go Mobile will be entered into a draw to win tickets to BTCC races and meet the drivers, as well as having the chance to win a BTCC replica Go Mobile Car at the end of the season in October.

Humphrey is predicting 10,000 new contract connections from the increased footfall. He believes the deal is one that will give it the national recognition it craves and drive footfall, which in turn will convince new franchisees to join Go Mobile’s programme.

Locally, Shebang sponsors Daventry Town Football Club, of which Humphrey is chairman. It recently spent 400,000 on a new clubhouse. The site includes viewing balconies and conference facilities, as well as corporate rooms, a bar, changing rooms and treatment area, manager’s office and patio-barbecue area.

“The amount of stores we have at present isn’t enough to build a decent national brand but the BTCC gives us our first national coverage,” Humphrey says. “We’ve spent 500,000 on this and you don’t make these decisions lightly. It’s about building the brand into our stores and onto the web; we’ll get that recognition we yearn for, to be a bigger brand. This will give us a big edge, both in our retail and web sales and gives our franchisees bigger opportunities than anyone else to get more.”

HTC Flyer Heads for T-Mobile In July

If you would like to own the Android Gingerbread packing HTC Flyer tablet, but are a T-Mobile customer, the word you have been waiting for may have arrived; word that the HTC Flyer is heading for the T-Mobile network.

According to the guys over at Phandroid, a tipster has told Tmonews that the 7-inch Android tablet may hit T-Mobile as of the 6th of July, and the Phandroid guys suggest the HTC Flyer on T-Mobile could be priced somewhere around 200 buck when signing up for a 2-year agreement.

However with the Motorola Xoom and other tablets sporting Android 3.0 Honeycomb, the HTC Flyer may have a hill to climb with customers, but the tablet does come with a stylus supposedly for ease of use.

Also there are numerous dual-core tablets hitting the mobile space while the HTC Flyer is single-core, and it appears the dual-core is what its all about there days so the Flyer doesn’t have a great deal going in its favour when put up against other tablets available.

So does the news that T-Mobile will offer the Android HTC Tablet excite people or are you simply going to give it a miss?

Vodafone SMS Outage: Easter Sunday Network Problems

At a time of the year when people were enjoying the Easter festivities, some Vodafone customers in Australia found that they were unable to send SMS texts on Easter Sunday, apparently due to network problems.

Thousands of Vodafone customers were unable to send text messages on Easter Sunday, due to what Vodafone is claiming was a network fault at an exchange. During the service disruption a number of customers took to Facebook and Twitter to voice their complaints about the service in what was known as “vodafail”. During the SMS outage a Facebook group which was devoted to the issue gaining 20,000 members, whilst the SMS services was offline and “vodafail” becoming the top trending topic on Twitter for a day in Australia.

Vodafone told ZDNet Australia “The disruption to SMS services on Sunday afternoon was caused by a network fault in one of our exchanges. Engineers are currently completing their investigation, but the fault was an isolated issue that affected the core network elements which manage our SMS traffic,”.

In a blog post Vodafone tried to appease their customers by apologising for the outage and offering customers 12 hours of free SMS services on 1 May between 8am and 8pm. However, this gesture by Vodafone did not go down too well with all of their customers, as some have plans, which give them unlimited free SMS anyway.

This is not the first time that Vodafone customers have had a problem with the SMS service going down, as UK customers suffered the same problem when a Vodafone exchange centre in Basingstoke suffered a break in on February 28th, 2011 – see full article here. Have you suffered with any Vodafone network issues? If so, please let us know.

Verizon Goes Ahead And Confirms It: DROID Incredible 2 Coming April 28th for $200

Verizon was the only carrier that sold the original Droid Incredible. HTC announced a follow-up handset called the Incredible S.

Yeah, that’s pretty much all it took for everyone to figure out that Verizon would be picking up the Incredible S sooner or later.

Sure enough, VZW has just dropped a big ol’ bag of official on the Incredible S, though it’ll be dubbed the “Incredible 2″ from here on out. So, when’s it coming? Surprisingly soon. Just two days from now, in fact: April 28th, for $200 on a 2-year contract.. Take a peek behind the jump for an overview of the specs.

Droid Incredible 2 Specs:

4 inch WVGA Super LCD

8 megapixel rear camera with dual flash

1.3 megapixel front-facing camera

1 Ghz CPU

Bluetooth 2.1

768 MB Ram

1.1 GB of internal storage (with microSD support for additional storage)

Alas, this handset has a glaring Achilles’: no LTE/4G support. With Verizon expanding their LTE/4G network at a breakneck pace and LTE handsets already on the shelves, are you really looking to lock into a non-LTE handset for 2 years?

PSA: Hacked Your iPhone To Tether For Free? AT&T’s Going To Charge You Automatically

Sorry, Jailbreakers; looks like the free ride might be over.

A few weeks back, a good number of folks who had been using a not-quite-official method of tethering their AT&T iPhones received a friendly little alert:

AT&T Free Msg: Did you know tethering your Smartphone to a computer requires a tethering plan?

In other words: they know what you’re up to, Buster Brown, and they’d rather you stopped. Now, AT&T is following up with a second, not-so-subtle message: knock it off, or you’re gonna feel it on your bill.

The text:

AT&T Free Msg: We’ve noticed you’re continuing to enjoy the tethering feature with your smartphone service. Remember, you need a tethering plan ($45/mo, incl. 4GB) to use this feature, so we’re planning to update your line with the required plan soon. Visit att.com/dataplans or call 888-860-6789.

We sent a note over to AT&T, and they confirmed the message as legit. If they detect you’re hackin’ up a piping hot bowl of tether soup, they’ll send you a note or two in hopes that you’ll either end your tethering adventures or plunk down the cash for the tethering plan. Continue to tether without coughin’ up, and they’ll add the $45 plan to your monthly bill automatically. Prediction: AT&T’s going to have to deal with a lot of pissed off parents over this one.

We asked how they were determining who was tethering through unofficial means (I figured it might just be folks with curiously high data usage), but their answer doesn’t really dive into the methodology: “The network is able to determine if a smartphone customer is using the device as a broadband connection for other devices.”

The most unfortunate bit: as far as I can tell, even folks on the grandfathered unlimited data plan — the one you have to give up if you want in on the legit tethering solution — are getting these messages.

Verizon officially announces HTC Droid Incredible 2: available April 28th for $200

It was pretty clear that a launch was imminent, and Verizon has now finally officialy announced that the HTC Droid Incredible 2 will be available on Thursday, April 28th. It will run you the usual $200 on a two-year contract, which will buy you a 4-inch super LCD screen, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, an 8 megapixel camera with a dual LED flash, a brand new 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and WiFi mobile hotspot support. Apple and Google To Face Senate Over Mobile Privacy

Looks like both Apple and Google are to face the lawmakers over concerns of the iOS and Android platforms collecting location info on users as the two giants of the mobile space have been summoned to appear before the Sensate.

According to the guys over at 9to5 Mac, Illinois attorney general, Lisa Madigan and Senator Al Franken have both summoned Apple and Google to appear before a Senate judiciary hearing on the 10th of May concerning mobile privacy.

Here’s what Senator Al Franken says in a statement…” Recent advances in mobile technology have allowed Americans to stay connected like never before and put an astonishing number of resources at our fingertips. But the same technology that has given us smartphones, tablets, and cell phones has also allowed these devices to gather extremely sensitive information about users, including detailed records of their daily movements and location. This hearing is the first step in making certain that federal laws protecting consumers’ privacy-particularly when it comes to mobile devices-keep pace with advances in technology.”

While Lisa Madigan said in a statement…” I want to know whether consumers have been informed of what is being tracked and stored by Apple and Google and whether those tracking and storage features can be disabled.”

According to the article other privacy watchdogs will appear at the hearing including top people of the department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, privacy expert Ashkan Soltani, and the director of the Center for Democracy and Technology’s Project on Consumer Privacy, Justin Brookman.

Looks like the powers that be aren’t too pleased with the iPhone, Apple iPad and Android smartphone sharing location data and are going to bring Apple and Google to task over it; more on this as and when we hear.

Apple gets its white iPhone 4 ducks in a row ahead of launch

Look, we all kinda, sorta know that Apple will finally admit it's springtime tomorrow and let the white iPhone 4 fly the nest. But in order to sell white iPhone 4s, you've got to ship them first, and one small Belgian retailer has just received its first batch of the mythical pale device and lined them up for some loving photography. Not only that, but they're even offering to sell you either the 16GB or 32GB over on their site (which, mind you, we can't vouch for!), though they can only ship within the Benelux region. One more pic after the break.

For the iOS unfaithful that simply must unlock their iPhone even though Apple doesn’t like it that use the UltraSn0w unlock, you may like to know that there in now an updated version of UltraSn0w been released to Cydia.

According to the guys over on iPhone Download Blog, the iPhone Dev Team has now unleashed UltraSn0w 1.2.2 with support for iOS 4.3.2, which will apparently work for older basebands.

Please reboot your iPhone using the normal “slide to power off” swipe after installing ultrasn0w 1.2.2.”

Barnes & Noble Posts Nook Update 1.2, Moves Closer to Full Android

Barnes & Noble has posted its long-awaited update for the Android-based Nook reader, which now turns the device into a tablet with full app support on account of the inclusion of the new Nook Apps feature as well as its own storefront for apps and services.

Although the Nook is based on Android with the latest update utilizing the Android 2.2 kernel as a base, the update does not include support for Google services or offer access to the full Android Market. The update will be rolled out via Wi-Fi within the next few weeks, which also includes a dedicated email client and an improved web browser, making it a viable alternative to larger and more expensive Android-based tablets such as the Galaxy Tab and Motorola Xoom.

A smooth start for Nintendo 3DS

At least according to Nintendo, but with the numbers currently standing at 1.06 million sold in Japan, 1.32 million in Americas both North and South, and 1.23 million in Europe and other assorted territories, it’s hard to disagree. The statistic Nintendo should be flaunting, though, has a lot more to do with the games, of which a whopping 9.43 million have been sold.
Nintendo 3DS2 A smooth start for Nintendo 3DS

And while 3.61 million consoles is impressive in itself, an attach rate of almost 3 with almost no heavy hitters in the launch line up makes it a lot more so. Consider the one-two punch of Shigeru Miyamoto’s Super Mario 3DS, which was promised for this year and the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time port and Nintendo could be well on their way to establishing handheld dominance again before we even see an ad for either the NGP or the iPhone 5.

Android Gingerbread Coming to T-Mobile G2X and G2

The latest word is that the Android 2.2 Froyo packing T-Mobile G2x smartphone may not have that long to wait until the device gets updated to the latest Android OS, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, although it isn’t clear just how long it will take.

According to an article over on Android Central, T-Mobile USA used their Twitter account to tweet “@thephilbert Gingerbread is coming to G2x soon. You won’t have to wait long.”

Although “soon” could mean any time for a couple of hours to several day or weeks, so it’s just a matter of waiting for the update to drop.

Furthermore, according to the guys over at Phandroid, by way of Android Unite, the T-Mobile G2x isn’t the only smartphone getting the Android Gingerbread dump, as T-Mobile USA also tweeted when asked if the T-Mobile G2 was going to get Gingerbread…”@The_Android_Guy In Progress. Coming soon.”

So there you have it, T-Mobile G2x and G2 owners can look forward to being updated to Android Gingerbread at some point in the not too distant future.

The latest smartphone out of the HTC camp is of course the HTC Sensation, and currently HTC is doing the rounds of a few cities in the UK with their roadshow showing off their devices along with HTC Sense, and today we have a little video footage captured at that roadshow.

The guys over at Android Central took a little trip to Manchester UK to visit the HTC roadshow and managed to get a little playtime with the new HTC Sensation and of course we have that footage for your viewing pleasure below.

You are no doubt aware that the HTC Sensation comes sporting the latest Sense UI, HTC Sense 3.0, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread, although apparently the Sensation the guys got to play with had a pre-release firmware running.

So rather than me waffle on about what goes on in the video, I’ll simply let you skip on down to hit that play button and check out the HTC Sensation in action at the HTC roadshow UK…enjoy.
