Google is taking local news to the next level with a new addition to their mobile news service. The “News Near You” service, once activated, uses your location (with your express permission) to update you on the exact goings-on in your local area. The local news stream will appear in its very own section, but that can apparently be customized however way it suits you.
And while we’re still waiting for “News Near You” to include “where did I put my keys” and “what’s that noise from downstairs”, this is definitely a step in the right direction for Google News, just like that mobile version update six months ago. Now all we need is for someone to go around doing exciting news-worthy stuff in the community for us to read about on our Android and iOS devices. Head on over to the blog post below to read up on all the details. If you live anywhere near the Google campus, it may just show up in your feed after you turn on “News Near You”.
