AT&T Officially Confirms Third-Party App Installs on Android with Sideloading

imageAT&T has sent out a letter to its developer program members and partners confirming that the carrier will now allow third-party applications to run on its stable of Android devices, effectively ending its blockade and opening up its Android lineup to behave closer to other Android devices. Currently, the Samsung Infuse 4G is the only Android smartphone on AT&T that allows for third-party app installs with the inclusion of the “Unknown Sources” option toggle and the capability to install the Amazon App Store without issue.

Following the letter, AT&T has also confirmed that it will roll out updates for the rest of its Android smartphone lineup in the HTC Aria, Samsung Captivate and Inspire 4G to enable the Unknown Sources toggle option and third-party application support. With the change in strategy for Android smartphones and third-party applications, PhoneNews.com officially ends its boycott of the AT&T Android lineup, which began with the HTC Aria.
